Annotation:
This article reviews several important aspects of the contemporary indicator systems that have been established for monitoring sustainable development efforts. The author argues that these indicator systems often overlook critical aspects of sustainability, social equity, environmental restriction, and economic necessities. The advantages offered by the deviation method in developing indicators of sustainable development are detailed. Several new concepts are evaluated, including a standard value of unsustainability, the state of unsustainability, and a state of moving toward sustainability.
