Annotation:
This article explores the use of LandView III, a PC Windows geographic information system (GIS) software program from the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and other federal agencies. It is very useful, especially for environmental applications. Moreover, the program comes with a wide variety of data about any county of interest, including census tract and block numbers, congressional districts with their centroids, summary demographics, zip codes, major and minor streets, railroads, and rivers, as well as environment-related variables such as waste management facilities and air quality monitoring stations. LandView III is a desktop mapping system that includes database extracts from the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Bureau of the Census, the U.S. Geological Survey, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Department of Transportation, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. These databases are displayable on maps that show jurisdictional boundaries; detailed networks of roads, rivers, and railroads; census block group and tract polygons; and schools, hospitals, churches, cemeteries, airports, dams, and other landmark features.
