Annotation:
The author explains that the current geologic era is recognized as the most recent of six periods of extinction. The author argues that the present die-out is driven by environmental crises such as climate change, ozone depletion, toxic chemicals, habitat loss, and invasive species. The author defines conservation in this context as preservation of essential ecosystems and the services they provide. The author mentions that the environmental health movement recognizes a change in global consciousness toward the essential need to protect human, animal, and environmental health and that the movement has coalesced from many different constituencies, with patient groups at the center. The author feels that environmental justice and occupational health advocates fuel the movement.
