Spatial Variation In Ozone Concentrations In Phoenix, AZ For 1997

This report examines spatial patterns in daily maximum ground-level ozone (O3) concentrations measured by a network of monitors across the Phoenix metropolitan area in 1997. Two types of analyses are considered. The first is primarily graphical, addressing spatial patterns in peak O3 concentrations against a backdrop of the population distribution across the Phoenix metro area. The second type of analysis is more quantitative, examining site-to-site orrelations between O3 peaks across the monitoring network. Results indicate that although correlations between O3 peaks measured at neighboring monitors are high, substantial differences in peak concentrations can still be observed across the monitoring network, and different spatial patterns in peak concentrations can also occur from day to day.
