Description:

An electrostatic precipitation system will be designed to remove at least 80% of radon progeny from rooms and homes which have high radon levels. A 3- to 5-fold reduction of radon progeny hazard is expected in most homes relative to present remediation methods. The design differs from that of commercial electrostatic dust precipitators which are ineffective in progeny removal. Two simple, low cost, energy efficient configurations of the system will be developed, tested, and evaluated in a house.

Measurements of the reduction of radon progeny concentration will be made to determine the efficiency of the system. Measurements of aerosol particle size and air flow will be made to help optimize the design, and to enable calculation of the lung hazard reduction. The electrostatic system is expected to be more effective and less costly than the conventional sub-slab ventilation radon remediation system used today.
