BioBinder Activated Carbon for Pollution Control

EPA Contract Number: 68D70052
Title: BioBinder Activated Carbon for Pollution Control
Investigators: Kelly, John T.
Small Business: Altex Technologies Corporation
EPA Contact: Richards, April
Phase: II
Project Period: September 1, 1997 through September 1, 1999
Project Amount: $225,000
RFA: Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) - Phase II (1997) Recipients Lists
Research Category: Air Quality and Air Toxics , SBIR - Air Pollution , Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR)

Description:

Altex Technologies has identified the BioBinder Activated Carbon (BAC) innovation that processes two specific waste streams to create a low-cost and effective granular activated carbon. The material is useful for pollution control as well as many other industrial applications. Under Phase I, BAC granules were formed, carbonized, activated, and tested for adsorption performance and strength. It was found that BAC has the same ability to adsorb organic and inorganic contaminants from water as a high-grade commercial activated carbon. Furthermore, BAC is projected to be 40% lower in cost than equivalent commercial activated carbons. Given the technical and economic feasibility of BAC, Phase II efforts are planned to further develop the BAC process and produce the product in a pilot-scale system. The BAC product then will be tested to demonstrate its ability to adsorb contaminants from actual wastewater streams. The BAC low-cost activated carbon will be in granular form, which can be used in adsorption beds to remove contaminants from gas and liquid streams. Potential applications include removal/recovery of toxics, organics, and inorganics from wastewater streams and removal/recovery of organics, odorous gases, and sulfur oxides from gas streams.
