EPA Grant Number: R825513C033
Subproject: this is subproject number 033 , established and managed by the Center Director under grant R825513
(EPA does not fund or establish subprojects; EPA awards and manages the overall grant for this center).

Center: The Southeastern Center for Air Pollution and Epidemiology: Multiscale Measurements and Modeling of Mixtures
Center Director: Tolbert, Paige
Title: Application of Biotechnology in Bioremediation of Contaminated Sediments
Investigators: Sahi, S. V. , Pavlostathis, Spyros G.
Institution: Alabama State University , Georgia Institute of Technology
EPA Project Officer: Hahn, Intaek
Project Period: January 1, 1995 through January 1, 1997
Project Amount: Refer to main center abstract for funding details.
RFA: Hazardous Substance Research Centers - HSRC (1989) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Hazardous Substance Research Centers , Land and Waste Management

Objective:

The purpose of this study was to investigate and establish a plant-assisted (phytoremediation) system with the aid of plant biotechnology to enhance the uptake, accumulation and degradation of organic (halogenated) and inorganic (heavy metals) contaminants of Bayou d'Inde tributary and other sites, similar in nature.

Approach:

In this research, the development of a plant cell and tissue culture system in order to select plant cells with higher tolerance to selected heavy metals and organic compound(s) from most successful plant species established in the Bayou d'Inde tributary was performed. Follow up activities included the investigation of the possible extent of transport or uptake, accumulation and biodegradation of selected heavy metals and halogenated organic compound(s) by tolerant and sensitive cells, and regenerated plants.
