Objective:

The goal of the Environmental Research and Technology Transfer program ("ERTT") of The Consortium for Plant Biotechnology Research, Inc. (“CPBR”) is to bring together universities and companies to conduct peer-reviewed, competitively selected, university environmental research projects using plant biotechnology and other bio-based technologies. This work will address the environmental needs of the country and EPA's long-term goals.

Approach:

ERTT will bring together the resources of CPBR’s member organizations to address the problems and the future of protecting human health and safeguarding the natural environment through a program of practical, scientifically meritorious, environmentally beneficial plantrelated research and technology transfer.

When the EPA FY 2010 funds are awarded to CPBR, the top proposals in the 2010 ERTT Research Grants competition, which have been peer reviewed, ranked for scientific merit and relevance to EPA missions, recommended for funding by the Project Recommendation Committee, approved by CPBR's Board of Directors, and approved for fitting within EPA’s legal authorities, will be funded.

Expected Results:

It is anticipated that the research will provide such environmental benefits as:

  • growth of bioenergy and other crops requiring less fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides;
  • increased production of industrial chemicals from renewables instead of fossil fuels;
  • more efficient and safer conversion of crops and plant materials into biofuels;
  • new tools and techniques for use in engineering or breeding desirable traits in crops;
  • assessment of the effects of genetically engineered organisms on the environment;
  • assessment of the transmissibility of genetically engineered traits;
  • development of environmentally safe techniques for genetically modifying organisms; and
  • remediation of polluted sites.
