Objective:

The objectives of the present research are: 1) a better understanding of the mechanisms of formation of products of incomplete combustion (PICs) due to the combined effects of turbulent mixing and chemical kinetics; 2) application of a turbulent reacting flow model and of detailed chemical mechanisms to predict chemical species concentration profiles; 3) reproduction and investigation of selected incinerator failure modes leading to the formation of PICs, and definition of a strategy to optimize incinerator performance.

Approach:

The formation of PICs during incineration processes can be strongly influenced by reactant mixing, which affects the instantaneous values of concentrations and temperature in the combustion chamber, and by kinetic constraints. The latter are strongly influenced by the chemical composition of the incinerator feed. In the bench scale reactor running at MIT, these constraints are simulated, and measured concentrations of combustion byproducts are compared to those calculated by different kinds of models.

A model which incorporates a statistical description of the turbulent fluctuations of concentrations and temperature is needed to capture at least the first order effects of mixing constraints on PIC formation. In addition, the description of the chemical kinetics must include all of the features which contribute to the byproduct formation.

Investigation on the final effluent from the combustion of chlorinated wastes is conducted for cases in which chemistry is slower than the rate of mixing. The research focuses on the chlorine chemistry in the afterburner zone of an incinerator, where the relatively low temperatures make this assumption reasonably valid.

The study takes advantage of the existing collaboration among MIT, Professor J.W. Bozzelli's group at NJIT for the chemical mechanisms of hydrocarbon and chloro-carbon combustion, and Professor H. Bockhorn's group at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, for the turbulent reacting flow modeling.

Expected Results:

Although incineration is a viable method for disposal of hazardous wastes, it is often ill-perceived. Concerns are centered on the quality of the exhaust from incineration plants. However, optimization of incinerator performance can be accomplished only by improving the fundamental understanding of the chemical and physical mechanisms of waste combustion.
