Research Category: Children's Health , Human Health

Objective:

The objective of this research project is to study seven genetic polymorphisms in the enzymes that activate and detoxify organophosphates and other pesticides in the population of mothers and infants enrolled in project R831711C002.

Progress Summary:

Project 3 has completed genotyping for a variant related to bisphenol A metabolism and analysis of those data is in progress. Genotypes and phenotypes of PON1 have been assessed in 656 samples, including maternal and cord bloods. Genotype/haplotype-phenotype associations of PON1 were found to vary by allele, to be independent of race/ethnicity, and to be stronger for infants than for mothers.

Future Activities:

We shall continue to collaborate with Project 2 to examine PON1 genotype and phenotype effects on developmental outcomes. We will complete the predictor paper on UGT2B7 genotype and maternal phenols in urine. We will also examine associations of the common UGT2B7 gene variant with birth outcomes and neurodevelopment with Project 2. The UGT2B7 promoters of our African-American population will be resequenced. The lipase/amylase data collection will continue.
